Woo hoo! I have Internet again! Something got screwed up with the direct deposit payments to my Internet provider. Should I photos of meals in Egypt...? No, I’ll post the star attraction from the potluck dinner I was at last week: this
curried lentil, wild rice and orzo salad. The dinner was for a co-worker’s baby shower. Pretty much a CBC Radio shindig. Sarah brought the salad to the dinner. I asked Sarah for the recipe as we were clearing dishes from the buffet table at the end of the meal. She said no problem. Then she quipped that the salad always seems goes over well with the lefties. I paused over how true that statement was. I thought about the quinoa salad Julie brought that night... the vegan cheesecake... the number of couscous salads I’ve spooned into at other work-related potluck dinners. All that was missing was spelt bread. Can you imagine such a potluck at a gathering of Young Conservatives? Forget the potluck, they’d go for martinis in the Byward Market instead.
I thought about gastro-politics again when I went with a friend to a peace-nik talk on the Israeli-Palestinean conflict last Monday. As we were leaving, she noted the highly dispropotionate number of meat appetizers left on the table, compared to the veggie ones. I guess people do live up to cliches.
That said, Sarah’s salad recipe is quite good. I made it for dinner last night. The dressing was a bit heavy for my taste so I might cut the recipe for that in half next time. And maybe serve it with a nice, thick juicy slab of steak, if reading the recipe makes you think you should break out the Birkenstocks and Tilley hats.
